We Care: Cancer survivors offer support and friendship to others facing illness

On a recent Tuesday night, 15 people sat in a circle on a couch and folding chairs, in a living room at the back of Silverton United Methodist Church. As they prepared to take in a lecture on healthier eating choices that help prevent cancer, more than a few made jokes about the plates of cookies and cupcakes that were still lined out on the coffee table in front of them.

The sign still hangs at 222 High St. in downtown Silverton, a two-level standalone commercial building with fatigued blue paint. The sign reads: “Nautilus of Silverton: Health and Fitness Club.” Another sign, “For Lease,” hangs on one of the side doors facing the alley. Venetian blinds cover the few windows. Inside, roughly 5,000 square feet once held 12 cardio machines, 17 strength machines and some free weights, said business owner Mike Thompson, just enough for someone to come in, pump up and get out.

WellspringHeart: Promoting a turnaround to healthy lifestyle

The brainchild of Dr. Frank Lord, emergency physician at Silverton Hospital and now medical director of the program, WellspringHeart is an instructional program devoted to the reduction of cardiovascular disease by changing lifestyles. Launched in November 2007, the program has had roughly 200 patients so far.

New Habitat director: Jerry Ambris charges ahead in difficult times

Ask Jerry Ambris what his favorite movie is and he will tell you without hesitation: Mel Gibson’s Braveheart. The 27-year-old executive director of the North Willamette Valley affiliate of Habitat for Humanity says he can relate to the image of a face-painted William Wallace on horseback, sword in the air, rallying his troops to stand together and fight against overwhelming odds.
