The prolonged recession and high unemployment rates are taking a toll on local families, according to social service leaders in the area. The sour economy also is proving to be a challenge for the organizations that serve struggling families and individuals.
U.S. Senator Ron Wyden said he had pledged, when elected in 1996, he would listen to his constituents and make his judgments based on what he heard. On Jan. 5, Marion County residents had a lot to tell him.
Long-time local businesses have seen economic dips before. Their owners and managers are using past experience to deal with this recession. For some, tried and true business methods and a sturdy reputation keep them going. Others have taken a hard look at their operations and are adjusting to meet new challenges.
