It’s an offer that’s difficult to refuse: guaranteed gold in every pan. But for prospectors who make their way to Camp Dakota’s Lucky Strike Mine, anyone willing to stake a $5 “claim” can score treasures of all sorts, including gold, amethyst, crystals and Native American artifacts.
Susanne Rosen believes in what a person can do given the proper instruction and lots of encouragement. A visitor to the Adaptive Riding Institute, where Rosen is the executive director, is likely to encounter a rider wearing a beaming smile, escorted by spotters and an instructor leading the horse through a series of stops and turns.
Chris Celio wants to be the voice for people “who are too shy to say anything. I want to help make things better for other people or at least try to.” He believes one way to help people in his community is by becoming mayor. His only hurdle is he has to wait five years before he can even vote.
Rick Schiedler is running unopposed in a bid for a second term as Mount Angel mayor. There are three seats up for the city council.
Scotts Mills City Park recently got a facelift, thanks to Scotts Mills Grange and harmonious efforts of the community and city. The new and improved park is now available for weddings and events, with a new covered bridge, freshly planted flowers, new grass and even a waterwheel.
The Nov. 2 General Election seems far off, but filing deadlines are fast approaching for those wishing to run for city office in Mount Angel, Scotts Mills and Silverton.

Rosie Thompson of Silverton and her 22-year-old daughter, Cierra Thompson of Mt. Angel, were on the first floor. Although physically on different levels, the same thing crossed their minds when the 7.0 earthquake hit Haiti at 4:53 p.m.

The event started 25 years ago when the Scotts Mills Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary organized a parade.
“The event was such a success that a group of people decided to start the Scotts Mills SummerFest,” said TR Williams, the nonprofit group’s president.
