Shaken up in Haiti: Local women witness tragedy tragedy while on mission

Around 4:50 p.m., Jan. 12, in Haiti, Scotts Mills resident Cecelia Taylor was writing in her journal while on the roof of the three-story dorm with her sister, Grace Fudge of Salem. Twins Janna and Dawna Peters, 39, of Mt. Angel, were on their bunk bed on the second floor with Janna journaling and Dawna napping. Rosie Thompson of Silverton and her 22-year-old daughter, Cierra Thompson of Mt. Angel, were on the first floor. Although physically on different levels, the same thing crossed their minds when the 7.0 earthquake hit Haiti at 4:53 p.m.

Search begins: Mt. Angel council seeks new administrator

The search has begun for a new Mt. Angel City administrator. At the Nov. 2 meeting, Mt. Angel City Council members unanimously agreed to approve the city administrator profile and salary range for the recruitment process.

Lingering questions: City posts Hunt depositions to Web site

In his dispute with the city of Mt. Angel, former city administrator Jim Hunt sought a total of $265,000 in lost wages, damage to health and reputation, and lost benefits, according to his “Petition for Relief.” The petition listed $185,000 in lost wages, $20,000 in benefits and $50,000 for damage to health and reputation.

Hunt vs. City of Mt. Angel: Judge rules termination process valid

The case of former City Administrator Jim Hunt versus the City of Mt. Angel was resolved in the city’s favor Oct. 6. Judge Paul L. Lipscomb made his decision on a core issue – the interpretation of the termination provisions of Hunt’s employment contract.

Choices narrow: School board to select superintendent from within

Either Andy Bellando or Linda Myers will be the next superintendent of the Silver Falls School District. School board members unanimously agreed at the Oct. 5 meeting to hire an internal candidate rather open the search to candidates outside the district. The board met in executive session on Oct. 12 and will review the candidates Oct. 26.

Linda Myers: Focus on making sure teachers have tools to meet child’s needs

Silver Fall School District superintendent candidate Linda Myers and her husband, Paul, have three children, Cole, 10; Elise, 6; and Emerson, 3. This winter, Linda and Paul are traveling to China to adopt 1-year-old Jack. Her hobbies are scrapbooking, singing, playing with her children and “anything outside in the sun!”

Officer back to school

Mt. Angel Police Chief Brent Earhart is grateful for the “investment” the Mt. Angel City Council and Mt. Angel School Board has made in the community by reinstating the position of the school resource officer. The position had been eliminated by the city council when it adopted its 2009-10 budget.

Court action: Pfeifer brothers challenge hazmat emergency clean-up

Was the city of Silverton too hasty in its handling of the stockpile of chemicals found on a property in town? Or did the chemicals themselves and the manner in which they were stored pose significant risk to surrounding properties – especially Silverton High School, a block away – to warrant the immediate closure and clean-up of the site?

JFK team raises funds for Peruvian family

The Kennedy High School football team and its supporters recently completed a series of fundraising projects to help fund a home for a family living in the outskirts of Lima, Peru. Together they raised $10,000 to assist a family currently living in a cardboard and scrap lumber hut build brick homes.
