The Man About Town: Is that guy dancing or are his pants on fire? …

By Jim Kinghorn

So, I takes a few days off and go with the mini Man-ette for our annual father – daughter camping trip to Central Orygone.  When we were checking in, the camp host remarked they too were from Silverton (The Man was sportin’ my spiffy Seven Brides Brewing T-shirt). So there we were, miles away, standing out in the woods with Ken and Elaine Ellis talking about how great Silverton is. I guess it just goes to show my mom (The Mom?) was right: “You can travel east, travel west, but after all, home’s best.”

Businesses celebrating their first anniversary this month include Creekside Grill and The Oregon Garden Resort. Join The Man in wishing them many, many more.

The Man has been known to refer to the sport of golf as “Pasture Pool” but for those of you that enjoy wearing bright polyester clothing, there are a couple of upcoming golf events to put on your schedule. First up is the Silverton Hospital-Wellspring Heart Tournament at OGA on Oct. 5 that will raise funds for their program to reverse heart disease.  Call Amber Olson at 971-983-5271 for information. If you are a true iron-linkster, sign up to play 100 holes of golf in the St. Joseph Classic Marathon Fundraiser. The Oct. 16 event will raise much-needed funds for the St. Joseph Shelter. For information or to inquire as to who has the best price on Ben-Gay, call Jerry Stevens at 503-871-0033.

Diane Sparks has taken over the former Spoleto’s Pizza location in Mt. Angel and re-opened just in time for Oktoberfest as The Village Pizza Ristorante.

Renee Bianchi’s Stone Buddha Asian Marketplace was recently voted the most unique business of the year by the readers of Salem Monthly. The Man says it’s about time they realized what we have known all along.
With apologies to Monty Python, “and now for something completely different” – Local photographer Barry Shapiro had an interesting show at the Capitol Center Building in Salem called enough, “Salem Insane.”  The show was a collection of images from the Oregon State Hospital (formerly the Oregon State Insane Asylum) and The Fairview Training Center (formerly the Oregon State Hospital for the Feeble Minded).

Todd Aune opened the Silver Fun Arcade on High Street in Silverton. He is open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. everyday but Monday so stop by and get your game on.

Longtime local cat and bird lover, Mert Edgar reports PGE recently became aware of a large osprey nest on one of its poles on Hook Road. Concerned the nest was too close to the power lines, they installed a new pole adjacent to the old one and moved the nest to make sure the birds were safe. Hmmm, fried osprey, I bet that tastes like chicken.

Well, it’s time for another great Oktoberfest so it’s time to work on your hot shot dance moves. Sure, you can do the schunkel, schuhplattling or the ubiquitous chicken dance but The Man’s favorite is the venerable Hokey Pokey. The next time you are hokeying or pokeying look around at all of the people doing the dance like they are not the least bit self conscious about it – there are only four days a year that they would do that…..and that is what it’s all about. Have a great and safe Oktoberfest.

Man About Town is a collection of hearsay, rumors and the occasional fact.  If you’ve got a tip, call The Man.
