The Man About Town: If a tree talks in the forest… Does anybody hear?

The ManBy Jim Kinghorn

Well, we finally survived the “Winter Storm”, “Deep Freeze,” “Oh my gosh, we’re all gonna die,” “Arctic Blast” and came through pretty much unscathed (other than the power surge at The Man-sion which fried almost everything electronic in the house.) Not fairing so well were many of the stately old trees that lost limbs and most notably, the huge maple tree at Main and McClaine. I got to thinking about how that tree was surely older than the town itself and how much local history it had seen in its lifetime. Then I got to thinking about if that tree could talk, what kinds of stories it could tell. And then I came to the realization that if trees started to talk that we shouldn’t encourage them because then we probably couldn’t get them to shut up, with them going on and on with all of their “great” stories. Then I heard someone yell, “Last call”…

Also in storm news, The Man sends kudos to the Oregon Garden Resort for offering lodging at very reduced rates for anyone displaced by the weather and Silverton Hospital for implementing its emergency action plans to do its usual great job in serving the community.
Silverton’s Redhead Engines is moving from its longtime location at Second and Lewis to a new shop on North First Street, next to McDonald’s.

The local arts community lost one of its own when Tom Allen passed away last month. Tom had the ability to make a piece of wood come alive and it’s sad to think that Tom has sanded his last piece of mahogany. Examples of his work adorn many local homes and businesses and I guess the best thing about artists is that even when they are gone their legacy lives on to remind us of their talents. Tom will be missed.

David Pyle, owner of Orion Plumbing, has accepted a job outside the area…..way outside the area, like Jalalabad, Afghanistan. David advertises in Our Town but even The Man didn’t know his ad would bring him work from that far away. David’s wife, Wendy, will keep the business running while David is providing plumbing for the military, so give her a call for all your plumbing needs.

Habitat for Humanity has announced the Jan. 15 – 17 grand opening of its new ReStore at 225 Franklin St. in Mt Angel. The store will sell discounted home improvement supplies to support its home building efforts and will be open Thursday – Saturday, 10 a.m.– 4 p.m. For information call store manager Connie Farrier at 503-845-2434.

Silverton resident, Bill Johnson has opened his new Allstate Insurance office at 103 S. Water St. Stop by and see if Bill can put you in good hands.

The Silverton Historical Society and the Silverton Inn & Suites will offer tours to celebrate the recent addition of local historical names being assigned to each of the guest rooms. Silverton’s rich history will now be on display as part of one’s stay at the inn. The tours will be held Jan. 23 – 24, 1 – 5 p.m. Refreshments will be served. I don’t know about you but I can’t wait to see how The Man room turned out…

Jeri Block has closed her Silverton storefront and moved Fancy Stitches to the family ranch in Sheridan. Jeri wants you to know that she will continue to be active in the community and is eager to provide you with all of your custom embroidery and promotional item needs.

Ron Hunt recently opened Audio Hearing center next to Cote Chiropractic on C Street. Ron even offers periodic free hearing evaluations so call him at 503-874-8600 for information……at least The Man thinks that is what he said – I couldn’t hear him all that well…

The Oregon Garden “Stitches in Bloom” quilt show is scheduled for Jan. 30 and 31. Last year’s show far exceeded expectations and this year should be even bigger. The show features quilt displays, lectures, vendors, awards and a two-day workshop. The Man figures that there must also be comedians because he was told that the show will “keep you in stitches.”
See you “on the street.”

My parents were always saving for a rainy day. If anything short of a nuclear conflagration hit, they had enough food and other supplies to last into the next century.
