Silverton girls finish sixth in Class 5A tournament

The Silverton High girls basketball team finished sixth in the OSAA Class 5A tournament last week at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis.

The Foxes fell to Mid-Wiillamette Conference rival Corvallis 41-40 in Wednesday’s quarterfinals, downed Pendleton 54-42 on Thursday and lost Friday to Springfield 53-43 in the game for fourth place.

Silverton finished 19-9 overall and tied with Corvallis for the Mid-Willamette Conference title. The Foxes won 12 games in a row between a January loss to Corvallis and the tournament loss to the Spartans.

Junior Alia Parsons and freshman Maggie Roth were named second team all-tournament.

The Foxes led the tournament in shooting, hitting 36.7 percent of their shots and finished second in scoring, at 45.7 points per game.

Parsons scored 40 points and finished sixth in the tournament. Parsons and teammate Brooke McCarty hit five 3-pointers apiece, tied for fourth in the tournament.

Roth was all over the tourney stat sheet, finishing fifth in field goal percentage (39.1), fifth in rebounds (23), tied for fifth in assists (five), and tied for fourth in steals (seven).

“These are great kids,” Foxes second-year coach Tal Wold told Our Town. “It was an easy year for me. They were so coachable, a piece of cake. Made it super enjoyable.”

And most of Wold’s troops will be back. Silverton featured just thee seniors, McKenna Chandler, the injured Sequoia Rysdam and Megan Traeger.
