The Man selects the Irishman as his running mate

The Man

Silverton Hospital Foundation development director Don Russo recently accepted a similar position with Chemeketa Community College. During his nine years at the hospital, Don was responsible for bringing in millions of dollars that have helped make the facility the asset that it is today. Join The Man in wishing Don good luck in his new position.

Congratulations are in order for Jose and Jamie De La Rosa of Allison & Israel Jewelers. Last week, the happy couple celebrated the birth of a baby boy. A “diamond in the rough”, The Man is sure he is a real gem with a heart of gold.

Call me crazy (you won’t be the first), but did it seem like a good idea to have James and Jefferson streets closed and the traffic signal construction on C Street
all at the same time?

Iron Chef Jeff Nizlek has resigned from The Bistro at Wellspring and will soon be providing the epicurean delights at the new Moonstone Resort at The Oregon Garden. The resort, BTW, (that means “by the way” for those of us who are tragically un-hip) is still on track to open in September.

The Bavarian House Restaurant in Mt. Angel is now offering outside seating for your dining pleasure. Shaun and Jackie Rottner have been busy updating their landmark building including a fresh coat of paint and the aforementioned courtyard. The Man says to stop by and give them a try.

The year was 1962 and a young grocery entrepreneur with a full head of hair decided to open his first store in Silverton. Forty-six years, 10 stores and a few cans of creamed corn later, the store that made a green bow tie into a fashion statement is still going strong. The hair ……. well, not so much …….

“Little Red Corvette, baby you’re much too fast”….. my apologies to Prince but it’s the only song that keeps coming to mind when I drive by Roberts Financial. Now, The Man doesn’t know if this is Steve Roberts’ answer to mid-life, but a cherry red ’64 fastback works for me. Let’s just hope he doesn’t get that beautiful car caught out in some ”Purple Rain”…

Speaking of cool cars, the Homer Days car show had to be one of the best ever. Next up for the custom paint and chrome set is the Stop and Smell the Roadsters show Sept. 7 on the grounds of The Oregon Garden. I guess it’s time for The Man to clean all of those month-old Taco Bell wrappers out of the back seat of the Man-Mobile.

Watch for the slick, new environmental receptacles (trash cans) to be placed around Silverton in the next few weeks. The 14 shiny, decorative cans even include the Silverton logo and are being made locally by GK Machining. They will be a big improvement over the “you have got to be kidding me” ones currently attached to poles – you know, the ones without bottoms ……

There’s a new restaurant in Mt. Angel and its name is El Pueblito. Owners Jesus Hernandez and Hugo Perez recently took over the location previously occupied by La Familia restaurant. Their specialty is authentic Mexican food which according to early reports is “muy bueno.”

Also on the restaurant front, work on Silverton’s long awaited Creekside Grill continues to make progress toward opening. Owner Manny Rodrigues and manager Quincy say “just a couple more weeks…”

Be sure to attend the September First Friday fund raising event in the Wolf building. Proceeds from the event will benefit the fight against the neuromuscular disease, ALS, and is held in honor of Silverton resident Loris Buccola. There will be FREE BEER, a silent auction, wine tasting, games, prizes and, oh yeah, did I mention FREE BEER. The Man says to be sure to introduce yourself to Scotts Mills resident Rob Chadwick who is facing his own challenge with ALS with a level of optimism and spirit that will truly inspire you.

Downey for VP

Well, it’s almost political convention time (ours will be held on the deck at Mac’s) and time for The Man to choose my running mate for vice president. So without further adieu my running mate will be …

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrpish (that’s a drum roll and a cymbal crash – remember, low budget) … Dennis Downey. Now, it’s true that Dennis doesn’t know much about foreign policy or how to fix the economy but he does know how to hunt and fish which will come in handy when apocalypse is upon us (which could be any day if we are in charge). We will also need a secret compound, our “Camp David,” and Dennis already has “Camp

Smokey Face” for us to hole up in when it really starts to hit the fan. I figure that we could last a couple of weeks up in them thar hills, or at least as long as our supply of quality microbrews held out. So, if it sounds like a vote for the The Man/Double D ticket means that you may need to fend for yourself, you would be right. But at least we will tell you that before you cast your ballot. And besides, what other choices do you really have?

Man About Town is a collection of hearsay, rumors and the occasional fact. If you’ve got a tip, call The Man. If you read something here that you don’t like, don’t call – it will just encourage The Man to pick on you next!

Homegrown candidates: Three vie for Silverton mayor’s seat

The three Silverton mayoral candidates actually have much in common. Kyle Palmer, Stu Rasmussen and Judy Schmidt all grew up in Silverton and graduated from Silverton High. Each possesses a long track record of community service; a term often taken for granted, but as a way of life, it is rare indeed.
