Homer Days seeks volunteers

By Dixon Bledsoe

The celebration of Homer Davenport, the local boy who made good as an internationally renowned political cartoonist, returns for its 28th year Aug.1- 3.
But to ensure the festival runs smoothly, volunteers are needed.

attend a board meeting held
Tuesdays, 6 p.m. or 8:30 a.m.,
at Silverton Book Store,
401 Oak St. Call to confirm time.

Lennez Hitzemann, president of Homer Davenport Days board, said the group needs volunteers badly, and they need them now. Volunteers have already helped prepare and clean the stored banners and equipment needed to advertise and run Homer Days, but Hitzemann says more people are needed to staff the information booth, take money and tickets at the beer garden and to help in setup and takedown.

“We have enlisted the Boy Scouts again to help and the Silverton Swim Team is on board this year as well. Both groups will definitely benefit from their association with Homer Days, as we are quick to give back,” Hitzemann said.

A family event, Homer Davenport Days offerings include the davenport races with its customized racing couches, the annual Homer Days Fox Foundation Golf Tournament and the Saturday parade with a surprise grand marshal.

Hitzemann said there has been some talk that the event was floundering.

“We ran into some difficulties a few years ago but those have been long gone,” Hitzemann said. “We are not in financial trouble, there is no internal conflict, and we anxiously await the next Homer Davenport Days celebration. We just want people to come out, eat well, have fun, and enjoy themselves.”

Homer Davenport Days Inc. has a new volunteer board of directors, lots of fresh ideas, and a good grip on how to keep this popular annual event running smoothly, and making enough money to dole it out to community groups, Hitzemann said.

Locals will remember Hitzemann as owner of the Oregon Tea Garden. “I don’t even live here but just love this town. Most of our board lives outside of Silverton but do business here and volunteer their time here,” she added.

“Historically there were some issues, but now we just have a lot of fun. We meet every Tuesday. The public is welcome and we are always looking for new volunteers.”

Many people are unaware that Homer Davenport Days board also puts on the annual Father’s Day Strawberry Festival at Coolidge & McClaine Park. The board uses the well-attended strawberry soirée’ as both a fundraiser and test for festival skills as they head into Homer Days.

Neither event is possible without the support from the community and volunteers, she said. To volunteer, call 503-508-9591 or visit davenportdays.com.
