Party: Lots of reasons to get together

Man About TownBy Jim Kinghorn

You don’t have to be the son of a son of a sailor to join the “Parrot Head Party” at the Glockenspiel on July 17, 5-8 p.m. but you will get style points if you show up wearing your favorite tropical shirt… even more points if you’re wearing a White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean. Either way, you’ll be able to enjoy tropical drinks and a bratwurst in paradise.

So you think you can dance? Well, I think we both know that you can’t … but if you’d like to try anyway, Dance at the Grange is being held  4:30 – 5:30 p.m. on Thursdays. Bring your free form, yoga style dance moves and get some “great exercise for your mind and body.” There is a $5 suggested donation but if The Man showed up I suspect they would likely pay at least that much to not be subjected to his “moves.” …Call 503-510-2253 for more information.

If you are approached by a thin, older, grey-haired man needing gas for his black Mercedes so he can get back home to Stayton, Corvallis, Woodburn or (pick a city)… you might want to explain to him that we don’t appreciate scum bags trying to take advantage of the good-hearted nature of people of Our Towns…..then kick him in the shin (that part’s optional)

Many of the people that visit the Mount Angel Abbey may not realize it but the Abbey has had its very own US Post Office since 1914….if you do some quick math, (The Man never puts “quick” and “math” together) that means it’s time to celebrate 100 years of operation…show up at the Abbey bookstore on Thursday, July 17 at  9 a.m. and get ready to do just that…

Schools out and the warm days of summer are upon us but soon it’ll be time for fall sports and the dreaded sports physicals that go along with them. To help you get ahead of the game, the Silver Fox Foundation and Family Medical Group are offering a sports physical clinic to any SFSD students on July17, 6 – 8 p.m. at Silverton High School. Download the examination form from the SHS website and bring it with you along with a $25 donation to the Silver Fox Foundation…then get ready to turn your head and cough……

Silverton’s Fallen Heroes War Memorial Plaza will hold a presentation and mock up unveiling at the proposed location in Town Square Park on Saturday, July 26 at 10 a.m.. Attendees will be able meet committee members, ask questions and give input on this long overdue memorial…. it will also be a great time to make a donation to this worthy cause.

Don’t forget Silverton’s Relay for Life is coming up on July 18 and 19 at the SHS track. The American Cancer Society fundraiser needs you to register, sign up a team, volunteer or donate…unless you don’t know anyone affected by this deadly disease…which is like, no one…Contact event chair Stacy Palmer at visitsilverton@
wavecable.com to sign up

After all that walkin’ and volunteerin’ or even if you just spent the night on the couch, stop by the Silverton Senior Center for a “Pancake & Piggies” fund raising breakfast from 8 – 10 a.m. on the July 19. Breakfast will be served for only $6 adults and $4 for kids and is sponsored by Schwan’s Home Delivery.

Then festival season kicks into high gear in August with the Homer Davenport Community Festival and the Silverton Fine Arts Festival. Both these events are major local fundraisers and make up the fabric of summer in our area. They are worthy of your support…and a lot of fun. Don’t forget to wear green to the Homer Parade to honor the late Orville Roth.

If you want to meet The Man in person, drop by the Our Town 10th Anniversary Celebration at Homer’s Kick-off July 31, 6 p.m. Coolidge McClaine Park. Admission is $5 to benefit Homer, but the cake is free.

A Grin at the End: Escape to San Francisco

By Carl Sampson I just got back from a long weekend in San Francisco, a city I hadn’t visited in 29 years — since my wife and I were there on our honeymoon. Oh, I’ve been through the airport a few times and took a quick trip through the west side of the city and over the Golden Gate Bridge, […]

A Grin at the End: College loans 101, solutions

By Carl Sampson I had a few extra minutes so I thought I’d solve another one of those “impossible” political problems that send the folks in Washington, D.C., running around hollering and waving their arms. It’s the cost of a college education. Everyone from the president on down says education is too expensive, but no one seems to know what […]

Shining jewels: More than just pocket change

It was 16 cents, but what it meant to me was worth a lot more. I was at the convenience store the other day, buying a pint – of 2 percent milk, that is. I buy milk almost every day to have with lunch. When the cashier asked for $1.39 I came up short. I was sure I had the […]
