Man About Town: Don’t just sit there… Go, man, go…

Man About TownBy Jim Kinghorn

The dogs are delighted, the pooches are pumped and the canines are clapping now that the long-awaited Silverton Dog Park is open for business… Just don’t forget to pick up their business before you leave….

Speaking of precocious pets, don’t forget to attend the Silverton Pet Parade this Saturday, May 17. The Kiwanis Club puts on the oldest continuously running pet parade in the country and is the social event of the year for your pet.

Speaking of the Pet Parade, this year’s Grand Marshal is “Bark for Life”, a fund raising offshoot of the American Cancer Society Relay for Life being held in July. For a measly five bucks, your pet can be stylin in a purple BFL bandana, available at Silver Creek Animal Clinic or pick one up at the parade… Your pet really wants one, he told me so… He also told The Man a few other things about you we really should only discuss in private….

Speaking of  Relay for Life, Anytime Fitness invites you to a kick off fund raiser for the big July fund raiser at Seven Brides on Saturday, May 17, 4-8 p.m. The event will feature food, drinks, a bouncy house, costume contest (come as your favorite super hero… I’m going as Vic Gilliam…) and meet heroes from the Silverton Fire Dept. to try your hand at a few firefighter challenges (hopefully not including a bouncy house fire)… Call Victoria at 503-810-1068 for more information.

Also speaking of (are ‘ya sensing a trend here?) May 17, there is a free event up at The Oregon Garden called “Must See Oregon” which will showcase all of the things in Oregon that you… um, apparently… must see…(The Man assumes that seeing these things are suggested, not a mandatory, contractual requirement of attendance). Either way, it will give you an opportunity to learn about resorts, cruises and all sorts of adventures around our wonderful state, all in one place. For more information, go to MustSeeOr.com

Silverton Country Historical Society president Norm English and a group of veterans are aiming to establish a war memorial plaza to honor the more than 60 brave soldiers from the community who paid the ultimate price for the cost of freedom. The memorial will be located in Towne Square Park and will be a lasting reminder that freedom is not free. Building a memorial isn’t free either, so call 503-873-7070 today to donate money or volunteer labor to this worthy cause.

If you live on the north end of Silverton, one of your neighbors (who will remain nameless) has some rather unique art in their living room. The art is in the form of a pristine vintage Harley Davidson motorcycle that looks right at home on the bamboo flooring between the loveseat and recliner… When The Man expressed surprise that the owner had a Harley in his front room, he of course replied “doesn’t everybody?”

Local crooner, Ben Rue reports that he has signed a contract with none other than Sony Records (yeah, The Man had never heard of them either…) Pretty soon we’ll be able to say we knew him when…

OK people, you can’t go speeding around town ignoring stop signs and running red lights without attracting the ire of Officer Bricker (and you don’t want that, trust me)… but for the love of Pete, you can turn left from the turn lane on westbound C Street on to southbound Water Street on a red light. Just as long as you stop first, check for traffic, aim for pedestrians (oops, I meant look…) and turn into the near lane… So don’t just sit there letting life pass you by, let ‘er rip…

See you on the street (maybe even at C and Water…..)

I must hand it to Kyle Palmer, Silverton’s venerable mayor. He has the patience of Job and can hold his tongue with the best of them, even in the face of naiveté, ignorance, vitriol, and, on occasion, just plain stupidity. As someone once said, “You can’t fix stupid.” Palmer must routinely “suffer the slings and arrows” of outrageous comments, often […]
