Sheyenne Brusven, Silverton High’s all-Mid-Willamette Conference goalkeeper, will be playing college soccer close to home at Corban University. Brusven signed her letter of intent on April 28.
“Her body of work in the 2013-14 season was monstrous,” Foxes Coach Fred George told Our Town.
Brusven set school records for most saves in a match (22), most saves in a season (115) and most career stops (270). The Foxes finished 8-5-2 overall, 3-2-2 in the MWC and advanced to the round of 16 of the Class 5A state tournament.
“I’m certain Shey’s skills will translate really well to the college game.” George said.
At Corban, Brusven will be reunited with sister Sierra, who will be a senior midfielder for the Warriors in the fall. Sierra started nine matches for Corban last season, scoring one goal and adding three assists. Corban, a perennial power in the NAIA’s Cascade Collegiate Conference, finished 11-6-3 last season.
Boston Marathon: Three Silverton athletes were among the 32,000 who participated in the April 21 Boston Marathon. Michael Traeger, 26, ran 2:59:05. Stephanie Traeger, 36, ran 3:36:15, and Terri Merritt-Worden, 51, ran 3:54:10. Merritt-Worden finished 419th in her division.
College track and field: Former Silverton High runner Morgan Anderson ran the fourth-best 1,500 in Oregon State history April 22 at Hayward Field in Eugene in the Oregon Relays. Anderson’s 4:27.15 was good for sixth place. Anderson, a redshirt freshman, also finished third in section one of the 800 in 2:13.25. She is second on the squad in the 800 this season. Another former Silverton High runner, Danielle Zehrung, now a senior at Boise State, ran 4:41.06 to finish sixth in the B section of the women’s 1,500.
Kennedy baseball: The Trojans have moved up to No. 7 in the state and have not allowed a run in their past four games. Kennedy is 7-1 in Special District 2, a half-game behind 8-1 Regis. Country Christian and Culver are both 7-2 and only three teams from the district advance to the state playoffs.
“Our pitching and defense have been really good,” Kennedy Coach Kevin Moffatt told Our Town.
Pitcher Dalton Susee is 4-0 in league play and only has walked two batters in 27 innings. Ty Sawyer leads the hitters with a .460 average, but Moffatt said “we have been getting contributions up and down the lineup … everyone has done something to help us be successful.”
Big games lie ahead for the Trojans, who hosted Culver on April 29 and visit Regis on May 5.
Softball: Silverton got off to a shaky start, losing all five of its non-conference games, but the Foxes have caught fire in Mid-Willamette play. Silverton, which played three Class 6A schools during the non-league season, is 8-2 in league play, tied for second with Dallas behind unbeaten West Albany. The Foxes are ranked 15th in Class 5A by the OSAA. Kennedy, meanwhile, is 5-1 in Special District 3, tied with Central Linn for second place, a half-game behind 5-0 Western Mennonite.
Hospital run: It’s not too late to register for the May 10 Silverton Health fun runs. The one-mile kids run starts at 8 a.m., with the 5-kilometer run/walk starting at 8:45 a.m. See silvertonhealth.org/news-events/fun-run/ for information on how to register.
Hall of Fame: Former Silverton High athletic director Jack Antonson was inducted into the Oregon Athletic Directors Association Hall of Fame on April 12 at the association’s annual conference in Sunriver. Antonson served as athletic director from 1977-97, although his teaching and coaching career began in 1962. He coached baseball, basketball and golf for the Foxes in addition to his administrative duties.
