Five students from Kennedy High School have been selected to attend the American Legion Oregon Boys and Girls State. The students were interviewed by the Mount Angel American Legion for the opportunity to represent their school and city at the annual conventions.
Emily Schmidt, Phoebe Hill, Cheyla Moranchel and Irene Osorio will be involved in the 73rd annual session of Oregon Girls State and Luke Colleran, an exchange student from Ireland, will participate in Oregon Boys State June 16-22.
Both programs will increase knowledge and awareness of these high school juniors as they receive hands-on experience in Executive, Legislative, and Judicial sections of government.
Upon arrival, each student will be assigned to a political party and become a “citizen” of a specific county of Girls State. From there they will participate in seminars and workshops, conduct elections at city, county and state levels, and work on drafting and enacting legislation. The motto of Boys State is “Learn by doing” through participation in real-world simulation opportunities, education activities and guest speakers.
