Buds and bottles: Winemakers tackle spring tasks in vineyard, winery

Hanson Vineyards
34948 S Barlow Road, Monitor

Spring means tulips!  Being just a half-mile down the road from the Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival means April is a colorful and busy month. In addition to regular weekend wine tasting, this month we have amazing vocalist/guitarist Mike Rathke performing at the winery from 3 to 5 p.m.  April 27.  And we’ll be releasing our 2011 Pinot Gris too!

AlexEli Vineyard & Winery
35803 Oregon 213, Molalla

We’ve spent the last month in the vineyard; pruning, tightening wires and laying down canes, and we’re just days away from having all the vines in position for the 2013 growing season. Seeing the geometry of the vineyard in this stage is always a beautiful sight. We moved into the winery this month to bottle the 2012 vintages of Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Chardonnay as well as the 2011 Pinot Noir. Our tasting room is open from noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, April through November. We hope you’ll stop in to taste our newest vintages (2010 Nuages Syrah-Grenache Cuvee and our 2010 Pinot Noir) and keep an eye on the 2013 vintage as she grows!

King’s Raven Winery
11603 S New Era Rd, Oregon City

This month at King’s Raven Winery the tasting room will be open noon to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday.  With the warm weather and early spring, it’s a great time to come visit the winery and get some one-on-one time with the owners. No appointment is needed to come see where the 2013 vintage is beginning to take shape.  If you’re lucky you’ll catch a rainbow over the vineyard as you stroll the grounds with a glass of wine.

St. Josef’s Winery
28836 S Barlow Road, Canby

Tulip season is one of the busiest times for us – with our own buds breaking on the vines as well.  To help celebrate the tulips, the tasting room at St. Josef’s Winery is open from noon to 5 p.m. daily the entire month of April. Guests enjoy strolling the grounds and often bring a picnic to enjoy at the pond with their glass of wine. Pets welcome.

Forest Edge

As I write this message, I am looking out over the orchard in bloom-early plums, Asian pears, peaches are all in bloom, the grass is green and lush. We’re at that time of year when we live with the illusion that we can stay on top of managing the orchard and vineyard. It will only take a few weeks to dash that illusion. Soon we’ll be behind on mowing, spraying, vineyard management….but for now we’re just enjoying the view. In the winery, we are getting ready to bottle the 2012 Sucré Chardonnay for release Memorial Day. Forest Blend 2 is in the bottle ready also for Memorial Day. FB2 will be a lighter, fruity red blend-a great summer red! Recent awards for Forest Edge Vineyard wines from the 2013 Springfest Beer & Wine Festival are bronzes medals for our 2008 Chardonnay, 2009 Chardonnay and 2010 Sucré Chardonnay. We will be pouring wine Saturday, May 4 at the Creekside Grill,  in Silverton as part of the Silverton Wine & Jazz Series. We look forward to seeing you there.
