A friend of mine always ended his email with “Life should not be a journey to the grave expecting to arrive in a good looking, well-preserved body, instead you should slide in sideways, used up, totally worn out and shouting loudly ‘Wow! What a ride!’ ”
I will be 92 years old shortly and I’ve started thinking about the ride. I really should start saving something for my old age so I cancelled my cable TV and my Internet and in doing so I discovered a wonderful invention called the radio.
Which is filling in nicely.
Hey, I remember our first family radio called a Fada. We heard “Hi, Ho Silver,” “Only the Shadow Knows,” Fibber McGee saying “Hi Mayor, What are you doing out in the hot sun when everything is so shady in city hall?” Beulah sing, “I’ve got the world in a jug, Lord, got the stopper in my hand” and the Orson Wells classic, “War of the Worlds” so vivid it made me run around the neighborhood yelling at people that our country was being invaded by aliens.
And the Lucky Strike Hit Parade. Great entertainment.
Now, perhaps, I can get on writing about important things like what’s wrong with our healthcare system. Of course, I can’t tell it as well as the wake up article in the March 14 edition of Time magazine. Of course, we know when most hospitals claim they are there for our health that is secondary, first they are there to make money. Can’t be denied. It seems some management is as greedy as Wall Street, and you know the trouble that got us into.
I am still riding two-wheelers. Life is good. It just costs too much.
By the way, the Barbie Lady’s art is on display in the Green Store in downtown Silverton. A bit weird, but when I saw what the painting Scream sold for at auction, it makes sense. Where does this talented artist find her inspiration?
I am sure delighted to see the daffodils popping up and next the tulips at the Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm will be a sure sign of spring. Have you noticed that so far we have again escaped the terrible storms that have hit so much of our country this year? While we got a little snow in Silverton, there was none in Mount Angel. Is there a divine reason for that?
