The Old Curmudgeon: News ‘n’ notes …

By Vern Holmquist

As I write this on Jan. 21, 2013, there are tears in my eyes as there were much of today – Inauguration Day. I am so proud to witness a man overcome obstacles that I would have considered insurmountable just a few years ago and become – for the second time – President of the United States of America. I salute you, sir, and I have faith we will go forward.

Now here is a piece of earthshaking news:  the “Barbie Doll lady” has come to town, and intends to stay. Lavon Salee has made a successful career of turning Barbie into works of art. She is leaving Vallejo, Calif., and setting up shop in the bustling city of Marquam. She is a charming lady, dedicated artist and welcome addition to our area. If you should suspect her dedication, wait till you see her car covered from one end to the other with Barbie dolls. If you see her, make sure to welcome her to our charming community and show her our hospitality.

Birdie’s on Oak Street – I had not heard of this store until Feb. 1 – a First Friday in downtown Silverton. I guess that is the reason for First Friday – to introduce customers to new businesses as well as explore what’s new in old businesses. Birdie is a charming lady who has assembled a wide variety of interesting merchandise. Stop in to meet her. It will brighten your day. Another good reason to stop by on Friday, March 1 is Stefanie and Mike will be performing. Don’t miss hearing this musical duo who relocated here from California.

In our world of high tech communication, let me tell you what a 91-year-old veteran had to endure to call the VA Hospital in Portland.  First I dialed the phone number and received one of those recorded messages giving me a series of extensions to call. I dial the extension and am told to stay on the line until an operator is available. I kept the telephone to my ear listening to recorded messages every 30 seconds telling me how important my telephone call is to them. Sometime within the next hour, a weak voice comes on the line from some place, probably India, to help with my problem.

Now, all is not bad because one of those every-30-second recorded messages is for the suicide prevention line, which is beginning to sound like the number I should have called in the first place. So much for high tech. Good thing I wasn’t in a hurry to go anywhere.

I love Silverton. It is the best town I have lived in and I have lived in quite a few towns. Silverton is tolerant, friendly, loving and full of great talent, and well run. Oh, well, one can always blame the city council for something, but that goes with the territory. I don’t see an armed revolution on the way, […]

People Out Loud: Paying it forward

What 7-year-old girl tells her parents she has enough toys? Kayden Eberle, a first-grader in Jan Bothum’s class at Eugene Field, is such a kid. Her coed birthday party was fun, for sure, as nine friends enjoyed bowling at Silver Creek Lanes.
