“At its essence, the class provides an opportunity for participants to discover themselves through the written word,” said Joanne Scharer, the course instructor. The course runs July 14 to Aug. 18 and costs $40.

For residents planning trips foreign locales, Chemeketa’s Spanish and French conversation courses can be part of the preparation.

“These courses are really designed for people who don’t need to know all the specifics of a foreign language,” said Beyer. “But students learn the essential vocabulary for finding a hotel or train or ordering in a restaurant.”
