By James DayJames Day

The Kennedy High school girls cross country team captured the District 2 team championship Oct. 25 at Bush’s Pasture Park in Salem.

The Trojans scored 49 points, led by district champion Lauren Stokley, who won the 5K race in 20:58.2. Stokley’s old PR, a 21:06, was set on the same course Oct. 18 when the sophomore captured the Valley Challenge. Stokely won by a shade more than 12 seconds ahead of Kenzie Collins of East Linn Christian.

Also scoring for Kennedy were senior Liana Bryde (8th), junior Erin Wall (14), senior Alejandra Parra (18th)  and junior Cheyla Moranchel (27th).

The Trojans’ boys team took second with 65 points, 42 behind East Linn Christian. Kody Osborne of ELC won the district title in 16:34.9. Kennedy junioir Dalton Susee was third in (17:06.2) and freshman Adrian Parra was fifth in 17:20.4.

Both Kennedy squads will participate in the OSAA championships Nov. 3 at Lane Community College in Eugene.

The Silverton High football team already had clinched a share of the Mid-Willamette Conference title heading into Friday’s regular-season ending game at McGinnis Field vs. South Albany.

The Foxes moved to 8-0 overall and 6-0 in the MWC with a convincing 30-7 win Oct. 19 at Crescent Valley. Silverton’s defense once again was on its game, limiting the Raiders to a single touchdown. The Foxes have three shutouts and have limited three other opponents to seven points or less.

Silverton is ranked second in the Oregonlive.com poll and the OSAA power rankings, trailing Sherwood on both lists.

If the Foxes win the MWC it will be the school’s first league football title since 1996.

Kennedy football, meanwhile, moved to 4-3 overall and 3-0 in the Tri-River Conference with a forfeit win vs. Culver. The Trojans played at Waldport (4-4, 1-2) on Friday after Our Town‘s deadline, with a showdown against Central Linn (7-1, 3-0) set for Nov. 2 in Mount Angel.

Former Kennedy football standout Derek Traeger has caught nine passes for 128 yards and a 14.2 average for Willamette University, which is 6-1 overall and 2-1 in the Northwest Conference.

Silverton junior Jonathan Sisley took second at the Mid-Willamette Conference cross country meet Oct. 24 at Willamette Mission State Park. Sisley ran 16:37, two seconds behind champion Maclean Panshin of Corvallis. The Foxes finished fourth in the team race. Sisley’s performance advanced him to the OSAA Class 5A championships Saturday at Lane Community College in Eugene.

The Foxes’ girls team also finished fourth, led by freshman Maddie Fuhrman, who took sixth in 19:47. Fuhrman finished just one spot away from qualifying for state.

Silverton’s Hart White took second in the junior varsity boys race.

Regis, meanwhile, downed Kennedy 3-2 on Oct. 25 in the Tri-River Conference volleyball playoffs.

  • Former Silverton High player Tyler Hagen is the leading scorer for the Corban University men’s soccer squad. Hagen, a senior midfielder who played at Chemeketa Community College and with the Cascade Surge, has 14 points on four goals and six assists. Hagen has started all 16 games for the Warriors, had an assist Oct. 24 in Corban’s 3-0 win against Oregon Tech which left the squad 7-6-3 overall and 6-5-1 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.
