The Old Curmudgeon: Getting a grove on…

By Vern Holmquist

What is your favorite music?  Whatever it is, it was there: rock, blues, Zydeco, African, jazz, folk, country western, all at Silverton’s music Shindig. There were 40 musical groups all over the downtown area — in business locations and out on the street. Of course, you could not be at two places at the same time, so maybe you missed your favorite but were still well entertained.

In my case, I heard my favorite music in two places and couldn’t get enough of it. Not one to be carried away with “primitive”  instruments, I was still blown away by Brad Hirsh and his steel drum performance. I expected solid, complicated beats, but not the beautiful melodies. Matilda and Yellow Bird never sounded better. A one man band.

Then there was the Jim and Allen show with their old folk songs bringing back sweet memories in beautiful harmony to all that could squeeze into the Silver Creek Coffee Shop. It’s hard to beat those old timers.

Many thanks to Greg Hart, Ron Nelson, Lawrence Stone and Gregg Sheesley who dreamed up and  produced this great event.

Letter to the editor: We did it – together!

Back in September 2008 a few people said it could not be done. They said Silverton Senior Center could not raise $100,000 to match a Ford Family Foundation challenge grant. Well, look at us now. Not only did we match it, we went far beyond that amount.

A few thoughts: Good work, hard work and a new baby

It does my heart good to see anybody but especially young people step out of their comfort zone to help others, selflessly, compassionately and without the need for accolades.   Ismael Caudle, Mateo Miller and Rieve Randall are three Silverton Cub Scout Troup 113 Webelo 2 pack boys who saw a need to help kids less fortunate through a wonderful program […]
