Race time: Candidates compete for Mount Angel council

By Don Murtha

Both familiar and new faces are vying for election to the Mount Angel City Council.

The ballot for the Nov. 6 election will have five candidates.

City councilor Andrew Otte is running unopposed for mayor. Current Mayor Rick Schiedler has chosen not to seek reelection.

“When Rick announced he would not seek reelection, I thought with my experience on the council, I would do a good job as mayor,” Otte said.

There are three council seats to be filled. Incumbents Darren Beyer and Kelly Grassman are seeking reelection; Peter Wall and Janet Donohue have also filed.

Councilors Ray Eder, Karl Bischoff and Teresa Kintz have two years remaining on their terms.

Otte is a graduate of John F. Kennedy High School and earned a bachelors degree in business at St. Mary’s College in California and a masters degree in business at the University of San Francisco. He is the technological project manager for the Bank of America.

Beyer is seeking his second term on the city council. He graduated from Silverton High School and is a route driver for a sanitation company.

Kelly Grassman is seeking a second four-year term. She studied Spanish at Chemeketa Community College. She has worked as an inventory manager and shipping controller. She is presently a homemaker.

Peter Wall is Mount Angel’s former city administrator. He is a graduate of the University of Oregon with a degree in public administration. He has been city manager for the Oregon cities of  Wilsonville and Toledo, a city administer in Washington, and director of operations at the Oregon Coast Aquarium. After retiring he served as interim city administrator for the City of  Mount Angel.

Janet Donohue is seeking her first term on the city council. She has served as a member of the Mount Angel School Board and the Mount Angel City Budget Committee. She is a graduate of John F. Kennedy High School.  Her previous occupational experience was as bank manager of the Mololla branch of US Bank. She is presently a housewife.
