Man About Town: Marvelous mustard… or monastic moneybags?

By Jim Kinghorn

If you hurry, there’s still time to get your Poe on. By the time you read this the Silverton Poetry Festival will be in full swing. To check out the schedule, go to silvertonpoetry.org

Speaking of festivals, planning for the Brewfest, Strawberry Festival, Homer Days, Fine Arts Festival and Oktoberfest are in full swing. Of course these great events don’t happen without a lot of volunteers so The Man asks you to strongly consider stepping up to help out at one (or all) of these local events…

Speaking of more events, the Silver Falls Family YMCA is proud (they are proud, not me) to announce the first annual Cornhole Tournament on Saturday, April 21 at the Seven Brides Taproom. The Man can’t say he’s comfortable with the name, but Kyle Palmer assures me that it is just a family friendly game of bean bag toss. You can join in the fun by calling 503-873-0205. Didn’t the Village People do that song, Y-M-C-A…hmmmm… Oh, never mind…

Is The Man the only one that finds it ironic that when you were too young, you needed a fake ID to get into the places you wanted to go… and after all these years, you still need a fake ID to prove you are old enough to get into the Silverton Senior Center?

In a rare Oregon appearance, the US Air Force Academy Band will perform at the Mount Angel Festhalle on April 19. Even better is the fact that they are not allowed to charge for their concerts so the show is FREE….and we all know, free is a very good price.

Dr Daniel Cote recently performed an address adjustment on his chiropractic office. He had to manipulate his new joint at 951 N. Second St. and massaged it to better meet his clients needs. The larger space allows for more range of motion and should eliminate the possibility of Chiropractic Subluxation Complex. The Man also heard that Ron Hunt has moved Audio Hearing to the new location. . .

Did ya see famous local his-to-re-an, Gustopher Fredrick(son)’s eight-page spread in the latest edition of 1859 magazine and at 1859oregonmagazine.com? It’s about some cat named Homer Davenport… Yeah, I had never heard of him either…

They actually allowed The Man into Seattle. As you travel near and far this summer, snap a photo of yourself wearing some spiffy Choose Silverton gear and you just may win a prize. Upload your photos to the Silverton Chamber website like this stunningly handsome young man and get ready to win. . .

Those crazy nuns are at it again, concocting two new flavors of Monastery Mustard. Hallelujah Jalapeno? Really? It seems these same sisters that complained about Goldman Sachs profits are now building their own corporate mustard empire, lining their pockets, joyriding around in fancy cars and buying up timeshares at the Vatican at an alarming rate. Pious Pineapple indeed, sounds more like Pious Profits to me… Disclaimer: This bit of smarmy sarcasm is intended to entertain and amuse and should in no way delay or impede with TSA-like scrutiny, The Man’s entry into the Pearly Gates or subject me to time in a really hot place as I overheat really easily around fire. All of the sisters I know are really nice people (other than that ruler across the knuckles thing), and they make some really awesome mustard. . .

See you on the street…

People Out Loud: Not Mayberry

By Dixon Bledsoe With the NCAA Men’s Basketball champion now decided (Duke over Wisconsin, 68-63), I have some vivid memories of March Madness, great games, huge upsets, and an unexpected meeting of the coach who led Duke to its fifth title. I was in line to a Las Vegas show with a business partner several years ago, and turned around. […]
