Field narrows: Four invited to visit Silverton

By Don Murtha

In a special executive session Oct. 24 the Silverton City Council reduced the number of candidates for the position of city manager from 11 to four, Mayor Stu Rasmussen said.

“The session was intended for preliminary evaluation of the candidates,” the mayor said. “Since the session was related to an employment situation, it was not open to the public.”

“It was very difficult to narrow the choices since they were all excellent candidates,” Rasmussen said.

He added the council will hold a social event, at a location to be announced, on Nov. 14.

“This will be a mixer where the public can meet the four candidates,” the mayor said. “Interviews of the four candidates will be conducted by the council subsequently.”

Preliminary selection of the candidates was conducted by Waldron & Co. of Portland, a recruitment firm hired by the city. Waldron conducted public surveys in August to determine the desires of Silverton residents for their city manager. Waldron then spent September and part of October seeking the best candidates to present to the city council. The city council will make the final selection.

Hurdles: Skatepark obstacle – money

There’s just one thing keeping the Silverton Community Skate Park from rolling forward. Money – lots of money. The city of Silverton acquired a 13-acre parcel at the corner of Westfield and West Main streets, donated a portion of it for the newly opened Silverton Senior Center; the rest is dedicated to community parks.
