The Man About Town: Yeah, baby… That’s what I’m talking about

By Jim Kinghorn

You have all heard the phrase, “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas” – a group of local merchants have decided that “Money spent in Silverton, should stay in Silverton” and recently launched a new campaign called “Choose Silverton”. For a nominal fee you get a reusable shopping bag, t-shirt and window sticker, all festooned with the Barry Shapiro designed logo. For more info, call Stacy Palmer at the Silverton Chamber of Commerce, 503-873-5615.

It’s summer time and it’s all about the kids, the kids, the kids….so grab the chillins and head up the hill for The Oregon Garden Junior Gardeners Club where their programs will get your youngsters “moving, learning and having fun” – then scoot over for “some fun in the sun and some art in the park” in the Silverton Art Association’s Kids & Art for the Summer series – finish up with a little Kid’s Karaoke at Mac’s Place on Thursday nights. Whew, are the rugrats tired yet? No, but The Man bets you parents are…

Winston Churchill once said “golf is a game whose aim is to hit a very small ball into an even smaller hole with weapons singularly ill-designed for the purpose.” If that sounds like fun to you, sign up for the Silverton Hospital – Wellspring Heart Golf tournament which tees up on Aug. 12. Call Ken Hector @ 971-983-5352 for all the info.

St. Mary\'s ChurchThe work on the small steeple on St. Mary’s Church has been completed and a new copper skin applied….but no confirmation that “the box” is where you’re sent if your confession is really bad…

Arcadia Publishing has teamed up with local know-it-all, Gus Frederick, to produce a new book on the history of Silverton and the surrounding area. The 128-page book is the newest addition to their extensive “Images of America” series and will be a must-have for anyone interested in the history of the area. You can own your own copy after the July 25 publication. Go to arcadiapublishing.com or next time you see him say “Hey Gus, how ‘bout that book?”

Pssst, keep it on the down low, but look for some interesting changes to the retail landscape in Silverton soon …but you didn’t hear it from me….

Speaking of changes, the Merchants Meeting in Silverton is now called the Silverton Business Group…same Bat time (Wednesday, 8 a.m.), same Bat channel (Silverton Inn & Suites).

All in all, it’s just another brick in the wall…er, or sidewalk…it’s not too late to purchase a brick paver customized with your name on it for people to stumble over on their way home from Mount Angel’s new Community Building. An order form is available at mtangelcommfnd.org/home

And another thing I just don’t understand… is, there you are minding your on business surfin the web and up pops an ad for Mount Angel singles. Hmmm, you say, those are some fine looking singles all right, with names like “sugarfresh16” and “starcrossedluvly”. They all seem to be interested in music, concerts, nightclubs, dancing, museums, exploring new areas and deep conversation. Huh, you say, that sounds like a mighty short date in this town but they are from Mount Angel, and they really want to meet The Man….just wonder why I’ve never seen any of them around town. Maybe I’ll give one of them a call and ask….but don’t tell The Manette, whose interests include beating The Man senseless and throwing his things out into the yard…

See you on the street….

Make a bid: The perfect place for Amazon’s new headquarters

I hear Amazon is looking for a place to build its new “second” headquarters. Seattle is a pain in the you-know-what to drive around, so chief Amazonian Jeff Bezos figures he’ll dangle the possibility of a new headquarters out and see what cities around the nation offer him. Atlanta, Boston and a half-dozen other cities are said to be in […]
