Joseph John Davis passed on peacefully in his Silverton home on Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2010, surrounded by his family.
Born in New York Aug. 1, 1929, Joe grew up in the bustling borough of Queens.
His interest in conversation and debate lead him him to the study of journalism at the University of Washington after his military service.
He served during the Korean War, stationed in Alaska and Washington.
He met his first wife, Joan, while studying at the University of Washington. The two married in 1952. Together they had three children and moved to Silverton in 1960.
Davis became the editor and later publisher and owner of the Silverton Appeal Tribune. He sold the paper paper and the associated printing business to the Statesman Journal in the 1980s.
His life of service also included a stint in the Peace Corps with his second wife, Doris.
Over the years, Davis became an esteemed member of the Silverton community, volunteering at local schools and being a business leader.
He was the Silverton Chamber of Commerce Board President in 1968, was named Silverton First Citizen for 1977 and received the Lifetime Achievement Award for 2004.
He had many passions in life including his family and friends, and enjoyed tennis, golf, racquetball, and sailing. He was always up for a game of gin with his family and friends.
His first wife, Joan, and his second wife, Doris, preceded him in death.
His wife, Sharon; his children, Cathy Wilson, Paul Davis and Susie Gex; six grandchildren and other extended family survive. A memorial service was held Nov. 20 at First Christian Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Silverton Area Community Aid.
