The Old Curmudgeon: Return on investment

By Vern Holmquist

Our corporations have spoken. The results of our mid-term elections are known and never before in my memory has big money played such a factor in determining the direction our country is headed.

The black day I heard of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision that corporations have the same rights as individuals in choosing and supporting the candidates that will do them the most good I went downtown with the hope that I could talk to someone just as angry as I was. When I found no one seemed even interested, I got even madder because I believe this decision shot down the essence of our beloved Constitution.  Now other countries can invest all the money necessary to buy the laws they want us to live with. Never before in our election history has so much money been spent on state, even district office campaigns, and none of it has to be accounted for. The best laws money can buy.

Well, it looks like the “Party of No” got most of what they wanted so we can be assured we are in for two years of a lame duck Congress. For those who believe our economic recovery has been too slow, they may find a dead stop is more to their desire.

One thing about it, we will see the rich will get richer and the working class poorer. Gosh, I remember when the term millionaire had a beautiful ring to it. A millionaire was someone to really look up to. Now a million does not get you a key to the big boys’ restroom. We now have as many billionaires as we had millionaires in my working days. Of course, we also have more hungry people. It figures because it takes a lot of poor people working their behinds off to make a billionaire.

A Grin at the End: What you leave out … but don’t take out the soul

The key to good writing is what you leave out. Too often, writing makes its way into the public circus without the benefit of editing, and it’s painful. The basic points may be there but they are crowded by half-baked thoughts and fictionalized versions of reality. Add a dash of ignorance about history – or science or math or politics – […]
