The Man About Town: It’s just like preschool… only more childish

By Jim Kinghorn

Silverton Police Chief Rick “the gimp” Lewis is back on the job after a recent surgery on a bum knee.  He is hoping for a fast recovery because his other knee also will go under the knife soon. Sounds like a bad case of the “Kneasles” to me.

Also on the injured list is the crew at Bangs and Burns. First, Marion “No comb overs” Varney had eye surgery and then hubby Darrel “Flat top” Mathews fell and re-injured an old shoulder problem. So, if you can trust a one-eyed, one-armed barber with sharp scissors, give ‘em a try.

The leaves are off the trees, the air is getting crisp, it must be time for the annual Silverton Holiday Shop Hop. Grab your “passport” out of this issue of Our Town (print edition), check out the instructions and get hoppin.

Those of us old enough to remember the “He-Man Women Haters Club” will appreciate the first Men’s Night Out on Dec. 8 at the Seven Brides Brewing Taproom. This $10 time of testosterone will include two bodacious brews, Christmas shopping at vendors and around town, an entry for door prizes, and free gift wrapping. The other two of men’s favorite pastimes, belching and farting, are optional (but probably inevitable).

Don’t miss the 2nd annual Jingle Bell Ball at The Oregon Garden on Dec. 11. Garden Foundation President Denny Stoll says it’s a great way to get in the Christmas spirit and support the garden at the same time.

Speaking of Christmas spirit, don’t forget to attend the local tree lightings. Silverton’s is on Friday, Dec. 3 and Mount Angel will hold its “Frohe Weinhnachten Kinder” (there they go making up words again) on Sunday, Dec. 5. The Man says if these events don’t give you the spirit you better check for a pulse…

Anytime Fitness will soon open a location at Westfield and McClaine streets. Owner, Robin Williams (no, not that one) says discounted memberships are now available for a limited time… Or was it limited time memberships available anytime… hmmmm, you better call 503-873-7033 or stop by for the details.

The Man’s quote of the month: “A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always depend on the support of Paul” – George Bernard Shaw

Well, the elections are over and if you’re like me, you miss them already. I mean all of those calls from nice people that really seemed to want my opinion on a variety of topics, The Man really misses that, even if my dinner was getting cold. And the mail, who doesn’t look forward to getting mail, lots and lots of mail. I really appreciate that they were thinking of me. Never mind that some were from candidates that claimed to be “green” but obviously didn’t have a grasp on the meaning of irony. And who doesn’t enjoy the cold embrace of the calculated nuance of negative advertising which some say without which, you can’t win. That may be, but those in office need to keep in mind that we don’t elect politicians to hear you complain about what or who is keeping you from what we elected you to do. We expect solutions, not excuses. As most of us learned in pre-school, sometimes you have to cooperate with people who you don’t always agree with. To be successful, you’re just gonna have to share the crayons and scissors from time to time.

Have a happy Thanksgiving!

If you like what you read, great. If not, you can take your chances and complain when you see The Man out on the street collecting hearsay and rumors. Of course, that might make you column fodder next time….

Something for the Soul: The unpredictability of life – Gratitude

By Winnie Bolton I write about gratitude often but it is never enough. Not wanting to sound boring, I try not to dwell on it but my heart continuously overflows with thankfulness. When a person moves from one great state to their seventh state in 50 years as Tom and I have done, one is faced with constant beginnings, forcing […]
