Authorities have charged a Mount Angel man with murder after he allegedly killed another man on New Year’s Day in Mount Angel, and the suspect is presently at large.
On the afternoon of Tuesday, Jan. 2, Marion County Circuit Court Judge Tracy Prall signed a warrant for the arrest of Agustin Barocio, 42, for the fatal shooting of Brandon Slack, 42, of Mount Angel.
The warrant said Barocio was to be held without bail. As of Wednesday morning, no inmate with his name had been lodged in the Marion County Jail.
Barocio allegedly shot Slack Monday, Jan. 1, on Pershing Street near Marquam Street, according to a release from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. Slack was found with serious injuries and died at the scene, while Barocio had fled by the time authorities arrived, said the release.
Charging documents filed Tuesday said, during the same incident, Barocio allegedly held a woman against her will at gunpoint in an act of domestic violence.
Barocio is charged with second-degree murder with a firearm, first-degree kidnapping constituting domestic violence, unlawful use of a weapon constituting domestic violence, and felon in possession of a firearm. If convicted, he faces at least 25 years and up to life in prison.

Barocio has an extensive criminal history involving numerous arrests for violent and drug-related behavior since 1999 in Marion, Clackamas, and Polk counties. This included an arrest in 2019 for alleged domestic assault involving the same female victim as the Jan. 1 incident.
Barocio was most recently sentenced to 30 months in prison in 2020 for a probation violation related to a conviction in 2018 for threatening two men with a firearm. He had violated his probation after being found guilty in 2020 of possessing methamphetamine.
