Pushing to hit 50: Community foundation rallies support for center

The proposed new community center for Mount Angel will get a big boost when the Oktoberfest Board of Directors awards a $50,000 grant to the Mount Angel Community Foundation May 17. The money is designated for the building fund.

The foundation is pushing against a June deadline to raise half of the funding for the $1.9 million project.
That 50 percent mark represents the high level of community commitment that the Ford Foundation is looking for, community foundation member Mary Kohler told the Mount Angel Chamber of Commerce directors May 5. The Ford Foundation board will consider Mount Angel’s request for a $250,000 grant June 7.

As of May 12 the fund stood at $872,531 in contributions and pledges.  In addition to many small, personal donations that figure includes the Oktoberfest grant, approximately $60,000 raised from the April 24 Farmers’ Auction, the $200,000 cornerstone gift from the Slayden Community Fund and the $50,000 pledge from Slayden Construction.

The new, two-story facility will replace the metal barn structure at the southern entrance to town built in the 1970s. Those wishing to support the community center cancontact the foundation at 503-559-0383, or email [email protected]. www.mtangelcommfnd.org.
