Since the inception of Silverton High School’s “Spring Week” it has become a much anticipated tradition for high school students and the community alike.

This year from Friday, May 14 through Friday, May 21 the campus will be filled with activities as Spring Week returns with the Spring Fling Dance, Carnival, Talent Show, Silent Auction and the Powder Puff Tournament, where members of the boys football team coach the girls in a flag football competition.

“It’s one of the few weeks each year where there seems to be something going on at every minute. The whole week is very energizing and is a great way to start wrapping up the school year,” sophomore Anna Rediske said.

Silverton senior boy will vie to win the coveted “Mr. SHS” title. It’s an evening that’s a fun twist on the stereotypical beauty pageant and is open to the public.  The seniors competing are Adam Carroll, David Larson, Jimi Tolmachoff, Joe Bremner, Joel Senecal, Justin Gooley, Matthew Nelson and Rhett Martin.

The Mr. SHS show has proven to be a crowd favorite and historically is the most successful fundraising event of the week. It raised $2,908 last year.

As in past years, proceeds of the week’s events will go to Medical Teams International, a nonprofit organization committed to aiding those in disaster stricken areas.

The Student Council, which is responsible for organizing Spring Week, hopes to top the $4,266 raised last year.

“We continue to donate Spring Week’s proceeds to MTI because it truly is a wonderful cause and they are able to donate $120  worth of supplies for every dollar we raise, which helps people in over 70 countries,” said Paula Cross, leadership teacher.

Community members are encouraged to come cheer on performers in the talent show, flag football players or contestants in Mr. SHS.

“Spring Week, whether you’re 17 or 71, guarantees everyone a little bit of fun,” sophomore Sarah Elliott said.
