Man About Town: It’s so easy… Even you could do it!

By Jim Kinghorn

It’s party time in Mt. Angel! First up on the social calendar is the Pub Crawl Jan. 23 at several downtown locations and then it’s time again for the wurst festival around, the (you guessed it) Mt. Angel Wurstfest. The event is Feb. 12, 13 and 14 in the Mt. Angel Comunity Building, beirgarten. On Sunday, every adult lady in attendance will receive a special Valentine gift just to sweeten the deal.

Also from the Village of the Bells comes word that O-Fest uber-organizer Jerry Lauzon is on the mend after a recent medical “challenge.” Jerry is out and about but The Man figures he is moving at about half of his normal pace so he will be temporarily limited to accomplishing only twice as much as anyone else.

Don’t forget as of the first of the year, your cell phone must be hands-free while driving. There are a variety of products available that will enable you to comply with the law and keep both of your hands on the steering wheel – what The Man can’t figure out is if my hands are on the wheel, what am I supposed to do with my knees?

The Davenport House Assisted Living facility has reopened its former location on Oak Street – no word if Homer will move in anytime soon.

Darrel Mathews is moving Bangs and Burns Hair Salon from First Street to a new location upstairs in the Wolf Building, Michelle Fenney has taken over and changed Stomp-n-Grounds to The Earth Cafe and Josie Christiansen and Pam Altree will move The Clothes Garden to the former Stomp Boutique on Main Street.

Watch for a crop of new historic streetlights to go up in Silverton this spring. The acorn-style lights were extras from Wilsonville that the city was able to purchase for half price. Sounds like a bright idea…

Quick, think of three small local businesses that you would miss if they disappeared……..stay tuned for details on the 3/50 project, a program designed to “save our local economy three stores at a time”…..Which three did you choose?

Can you count without having to take off your socks? Do you like people? If so, have we got a deal for you – Julie Podesta is recruiting folks to work full or part time performing the 2010 Census in our area. These temporary positions pay well but you will have to call the Salem office at 971-240-4800 to schedule a required test to verify the whole sock thing.

Hey fellas, ya’ know Valentines Day is coming up and if you’re like most of us Neanderthals, you don’t know what to do. Worry no more my knuckle dragging friends, The Man has you covered. First, take in Carol Fritsche’s Feb. 6, one-night-only production of Love Letters at Silverton High School. Then stop by a local gift shop and use that (perfected over many years of evolution) clueless look until the shopkeeper recognizes it and shows you what to buy. Pick up some flowers and stop by The Chocolate Box for, duh, chocolates. Have a romantic dinner at one of the fine area restaurants and then finish up with a room at one of the lovely local inns……. You can thank me later, Stud Boys.

See you on the street…….

Man About Town is a collection of hearsay, rumors and the occasional fact.  If you’ve got a tip, call The Man. If you read something here that you don’t like, don’t call – it will just encourage The Man to pick on you next.
