O’fest awards grants: More than $100k goes to area nonprofits

John Gooley, Oktoberfest president announced the distribution of $105,250 to be shared by 48 non-profit organizations in Mt. Angel and surrounding communities as a result of this year’s successful Oktoberfest.

This figure does not include $637,742.23 earned by the non-profit community groups that operated 47 food booths at the four-day event in Sepember.

The Mt. Angel Community Foundation will receive $50,000. Jim Hall, treasurer of the foundation said the money would be used to help build a new Mt. Angel Community Center.

The proposed building will serve the needs of local non-profit agencies, civic groups, churches, schools and community members to host events and activities, including fundraisers, classes and receptions.

It also will serve as the designated emergency shelter in the case of natural disaster. And, it will host a portion of the Oktoberfest.

St. Joseph Shelter, Mt. Angel Community Chest, Mt. Angel Senior Center, Northwest Senior & Disability Services for Mt. Angel, Silverton Together, Silverton Area Community Aid, Silverton Women’s Zenith Club and other organizations that help the needy split $5,050.

Area schools, scouting and other youth activities will receive $16,750.

Silverton Hospital, Providence Benedictine Nursing Center, Mount Angel Developmental Program will share $4,500.

St. Mary Parish in Mt. Angel, the Benedictine Sisters, Missionaries of the Holy Spirit, Mt. Angel Abbey, KBVM Catholic Broadcasting and the Festival Chorale Oregon will share $9,100.

Mt. Angel Volunteer Firefighters Association, Mt. Angel Chamber of Commerce, Marion County Search and Rescue, American Legion Post #89, Marion County Search Dogs, Oregon Mounted Posse and other service groups will divide $19,850 for the continuance of their works.

Many of the church, school and service groups involved say Oktoberfest is the most important event of the year for their fundraising efforts.

Oktoberfest 2010 will run from Sept. 16 – 19.
