Holiday cheer: Chambers set the stage for family holiday fun

KristkindlMarkt and Tree Lighting

Enjoy the traditions and food of a Bavarian village without having to travel to Germany.

The Mt. Angel Chamber of Commerce hosts the fourth annual KristkindlMarkt, a German Christmas tradition, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4.

The outdoor market is a family-friendly event with food, beverages, music, entertainment and shopping. Vendors will sell holiday and other crafts while local restaurants offer traditional foods and beverages, including wines from Oregon as well as “gluhwein,” a hot-spiced German wine.

The villagers of Mt. Angel invite everyone to gather around the town’s gazebo at 4:30 p.m. for the annual tree lighting.

A new feature this year will be a fire pit designed and built by the crew from The Grant Co. Visitors can gather around the fire to keep warm while enjoying the sights – trees with sparkling lights – and sounds – a town crier and carolers.

The Mt. Angel Fire Department will provide Kris Kingle with transportation to town. After Kris Kingle’s arrival, he will visit with children to hear their holiday wishes and will light the Christmas tree.

Silverton Christmas Tree Lighting

The magic of the holiday season is clearly reflected on the faces of people gathering for Silverton’s Christmas Tree Lighting as they watch Santa Claus lifted above the crowd on a fire truck ladder. He sprinkles magic fairy dust at the top of the tree to make it sparkle and officially start the holiday season.

The annual tree lighting, organized by the Silverton Chamber of Commerce, begins at 6 p.m., Dec. 4, with carolers and musicians from local schools gathering at Town Square Park, at the corner of Main and Fiske.

Enjoy a cup of hot chocolate while visiting with friends, family and neighbors. After the tree lighting, children are invited to visit Santa Claus and express their holiday wishes. His headquarters will be at Citizens Bank, 217 E. Main St.

The tree lighting also coincides with the celebration of First Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. in downtown Silverton. The First Friday celebration is a chance to do some holiday shopping while supporting local art galleries, boutiques and restaurants.
