Court action: Pfeifer brothers challenge hazmat emergency clean-up

Was the city of Silverton too hasty in its handling of the stockpile of chemicals found on a property in town? Or did the chemicals themselves and the manner in which they were stored pose significant risk to surrounding properties – especially Silverton High School, a block away – to warrant the immediate closure and clean-up of the site?

Gold medal friends: Janine Nelson grateful for coworker support

Janine Nelson was nearing her job at Providence Benedictine Nursing Center – a little early, as usual – on Mt. Angel Highway the morning of July 21. She hadn’t been back to work all that long, but it appeared her son Jefferey was on the mend after his heart transplant a few months earlier. Chances are, she was thinking about how enjoyable her job was; the people with whom she’d worked for the past 14 years, and how lucky she was that while at work, she could always see her mom, Diane Gwyn, who’d been a resident there for the past four years after she had a stroke in 2000.

The Man About Town: Is that guy dancing or are his pants on fire? …

So, I takes a few days off and go with the mini Man-ette for our annual father – daughter camping trip to Central Orygone. When we were checking in, the camp host remarked they too were from Silverton (The Man was sportin’ my spiffy Seven Brides Brewing T-shirt). So there we were, miles away, standing out in the woods with Ken and Elaine Ellis talking about how great Silverton is. I guess it just goes to show my mom (The Mom?) was right: “You can travel east, travel west, but after all, home’s best.”

Letter to the editor: We did it – together!

Back in September 2008 a few people said it could not be done. They said Silverton Senior Center could not raise $100,000 to match a Ford Family Foundation challenge grant. Well, look at us now. Not only did we match it, we went far beyond that amount.

Silver Falls Nature Store: Log cabin setting attracts customers

You’ve heard of “new and improved?” It’s an apt description for the Nature Store at Silver Falls State Park. For years the store was hidden away inside South Lodge in a dark, somewhat gloomy, corner room near the café. But that’s all changed.
