Letter to the Editor: Oversight missing

On my way to work a few weeks ago I realized that one of the usual streets on my route, Westfield, was under construction. My job is rooted in the construction industry (horizontal directional drilling), so I was acutely aware of the fact that multicolored paint on the road indicates that something is about to happen and it is likely going to involve digging.

The event’s name has been changed from Mayor’s Ball to Silverton Community Charity Ball, but the function’s the same: get together for some great food and rockin’ music while raising funds to benefit local organizations and projects.

From the Editor: A civil discussion…

Matt Ogle’s speech class at Silverton High is one of my favorite things. I’ve had two kids go through the program, and while the weekend tournaments can make scheduling family time a challenge, it’s been wonderfully worthwhile.

Choices narrow: School board to select superintendent from within

Either Andy Bellando or Linda Myers will be the next superintendent of the Silver Falls School District. School board members unanimously agreed at the Oct. 5 meeting to hire an internal candidate rather open the search to candidates outside the district. The board met in executive session on Oct. 12 and will review the candidates Oct. 26.

Cooley family: Pioneers survived challenges and that tradition continues

By Linda Whitmore Richard “Rick” Ernst has done a great deal of genealogical study about the Cooley family – his mother’s ancestors – tracing them back to the 1740s in Virginia. Like other American pioneers, subsequent generations of Cooleys moved westward. Some were among Silverton’s early settlers and through the years the name Cooley has become world renowned for the […]
